Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about canine mold detection with NH Mold Dogs. Don’t see your question? Ask us directly.
Can dogs really detect mold?
Yes. A dog's nose has up to 300 million scent receptors (compared to roughly 6 million in humans). Trained detection dogs can pinpoint the source of mold growth by following the scent to its origin — even when mold is hidden behind walls, under flooring, or inside HVAC systems where visual inspection or air sampling alone can't locate it.
Is the detection dog safe around kids and pets?
Absolutely. Our detection dog is trained to be calm, focused, and well-mannered on the job. As a hypoallergenic poodle, he's also a great fit for households with allergy concerns — he's clean, low-shedding, and gentle around children and other animals.
How long does an inspection take?
Most inspections take under an hour — typically 20 minutes to an hour depending on property size and complexity. We'll give you an estimated time frame when you book.
Is canine mold detection a substitute for lab testing?
Canine detection and lab testing serve different purposes. A dog pinpoints where mold is hiding so you know exactly where to act. Lab testing (air or surface sampling) tells you what species and spore counts are present. Many clients use canine detection first to locate problem areas, then follow up with targeted lab sampling only where needed — often saving money versus blanket testing.
Do you do post-remediation verification?
Yes. After mold has been cleaned up, we can sweep the area with the detection dog to confirm the source has been successfully addressed. This is a fast, non-invasive way to verify cleanup without drilling into freshly repaired walls.
Will the inspection damage my property?
No. Canine mold detection is completely non-invasive — no drilling, no cutting into drywall, no lifting floors. The dog simply sweeps the space and alerts on mold locations, so your property stays intact.
